Biography

Neihana was born in 2014 and has a twin sister Aotea. Neihana was a normal active boy - he was very cheeky, smiley and loving. He was also very active - he loved to run and play outside, and he was a great dancer!
The twins had been at daycare a few months so I could go back to work part time, when at 22 months old Neihana choked while at daycare on an apple. His breathing and heart stopped (cardiac arrest) for 30-40 mins before they were able to get his heart going again.Thankfully he survived but was severely brain damaged. He spent months in hospital and was not able to even move his eyes at the start. He now has cerebral palsy/ spastic quadriplegia, however he has made a lot of progress over the last 2 years and can now smile, laugh, eat puree and move his arms a lot more. He still can’t move his legs much, use his hands much, move his eyes properly or speak. It has been very difficult, he has been through a lot and he has quite a few hospital admissions. He does hours of therapy a day. Now that we have sorted out most of the issues he was having, he is mostly a happy boy again. He is a joy and we celebrate the progress he makes.
